TCO Vs Openness

Today I came across this interesting finding, why would different people would go for FOSS based applications. Some people think it is the Open Aspect, or the Openness of the culture that would thrive the FOSS Software model. And another party thinks Total Cost of Ownership, or the TCO thrive FOSS model. This is like the two sides of the same coin.

Openness is adored by all the hacker community and this is kind of a technocratic idea, which might not be realistic in the real economic system. The TCO factor is important when the business community is concerned. At the end of the year what you want is some high figure in your Profit and Loss account, wonder of this figure is that more the merrier.

In conclusion, from a economic/business perspective TCO makes sense to FOSS than Openness, in my belief.
